Zanzibar
Geographie
Zanzibar is actually a group of islands on the East coast of Africa.
There is the main island Zanzibar (Suaheli: Unguja,) with 1.658 km²
and Pemba with 984km² in the north. Both islands are part of
Tanzania and lie off the east coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean.
The main town and economic centre is Stone Town .in Zanzibar.

Flora und Fauna
Zanzibar is the only home of the Red Colobus monkey. The beaches of Prison Island are famous for turtle breeding.
Society
Zanzibar is a conservative, Muslim society with a population of about 880.000 people. The spoken language is Kisuaheli and English.
Economic
Zanzibar`s main industries are spices (including nutmeg, cinnamon, cumin and red pepper) and tourism.
Also the construction of wooden boats has a tradition in Zanzibar.
Culture
One of the famous people of Zanzibar was the musician Freddy Mercury of the group Queen.
He was born on the 5th of September 1946 in Zanzibar under the name Farrokh Bulsara.
Zanzibar has a fascinating history influenced by Persians, Arabs, Muslim, the Portuguese
and the African mainland. Stone Town is a place of winding lanes, circular towers, carved wooden doors,
raised terraces and beautiful mosques. Important architectural features are the Livingstone house,
the Guliani Bridge, and the House of Wonders, a palace constructed by Sultan Barghash in 1883.
